Stress Vitamins

Stress is an emotional response to challenges and stressors in our lives. It can be something as serious as a car accident, or dropping your dinner plate on the floor. You’ve probably heard of “fight or flight response”. Stress can also be induced by chemicals, drugs, infection, surgery, and emotional upset. When we face these challenges, we respond emotionally, and a series of chemical responses begin happening internally.

Most of us are familiar with the adrenaline “rush” of riding a roller coaster, bungee jumping, or similar outdoor activities. But in our everyday lives, between work, home, and personal relationships we are experiencing more challenges than ever before. and our bodies were not designed to continually experience this type of stress on a continual basis. When we do, we call it “burn out”. People experience depression, insomnia, physical and mental exhaustion, nausea, headaches, and a host of other complaints.

This is why it is more important than ever to add a multivitamin or stress vitamin to our daily regimen.

The “B” vitamins are some of the most important to combat stress. And let’s face it, none of us eat adequate diets to deal with today’s stressors. How many of us eat calves liver, wheat germ, molasses, yeast, and brown rice which are the best known sources for B vitamins? Left untreated, a B vitamin deficiency can cause baldness, blindness, high blood pressure, joint pain, eczema, depression, PMS, and dementia. [For a more thorough discussion on symptoms and dosages see Adelle Davis’ book “Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit.”]

Stress vitamins are not needed under “normal” conditions, but what’s normal?

Stress also impacts our immune system which makes us more vulnerable to colds and flu. To boost our immunity, we should consider the stress vitamin “C”. It is safer than most pharmaceutical drugs and is considered a natural “antibiotic” by many M.D.s, Naturopaths, and Nutritionists. Vitamin C has been shown to successfully treat chemical poisoning, insect and snake bites, infection, and fatigue. The military has conducted a series of experiments on soldiers using vitamin C. During exercises they experienced little fatigue and no leg cramps having carried heavy gear into fields and hiking over mountain ranges as compared to a similar test group without vitamin C.

Magnesium is also another stress vitamin often called “nature’s tranquilizer”. Even a slight deficiency can result in symptoms of fatigue, irritability, sensitivities, and panic attacks. It can also affect brain function resulting in foggy thinking, insomnia, depression, and mental confusion. The best sources of magnesium are nuts, green leafy vegetables like chard, kale, and spinach as well as soybeans.

Since we eat fastfood and not enough wheat germ and greens, then consider supplementation. One of the best stress vitamin - mineral complexes I’ve seen in a long time is “Tangy Tangerine” from Dr. Wallach of “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie” fame.

This just released, plant derived drink mix contains a full daily complement of vitamins, amino acids, and minerals. And it tastes good! Examine the “Supplement Facts” and you’ll find the stress vitamins needed for sound nutrition: Vitamin C, B Complex, Calcium and Magnesium, and trace minerals.

Rather than spend hundreds of dollars at the local health food store for bottled supplements (which I don’t know if I’m really absorbing), I’ve opted for this multi-vitamin drink. I add two scoops to my morning protein smoothie. It gives me a great energy boost, balances my blood sugar, and I know I’m getting the needed nutrition.
